After her acclaimed 2019 EP Ama Who?, and her highly-anticipated return in 2021 with AT LEAST WE HAVE THIS. Ama Lou is back with a deluxe version of the latter and a captivating video clip for Same Old Ways.
One of the most versatile artists to come out of the U.K. in recent years, Ama Lou delivers yet another R&B jam that is guaranteed to get stuck in you head. In spite of her work and success in the States, she has stayed true to her North London roots, infusing the sounds and culture of her city in her lyrics and melodies. On production is the Grammy award-winning producer and writer Maestro the Baker, whose catalogue includes collaborations with artists ranging from Rihanna and J Hus to Miraa May and JVCK JAMES. Furthermore, guided along by Ama’s rich and distinctive vocals proudly on show even on this trappy aesthetic.
The visuals take us back to the first day of school–only it looks so much cooler. Ama Lou finds herself in Black boys-only college, mingling and fitting right in. On a deeper look, the building is reminiscent of elitist schools across the U.K., which subverts the harsh reality of Black educational inequality.
It has been an interesting ride watching the internet’s reaction to the new clip. People on Twitter are calling out her resemblance to Zendaya, while Ama’s celebrity fans are showing their support on Instagram. In fact, Drake commented “Nah ur too hard ??????” on her post announcing the release. Does this mean we should be expecting a collaboration soon?
