We had a feeling Syd was up to something ever since she released Right Track and Fast Car last year. She’s now revealed her new album, Broken Hearts Club, is on the way next month. And she’s just given us another taste of what’s to come, dropping some dope sci-fi inspired visuals for the new single, CYBAH, featuring man of the moment, Lucky Daye. Gifting us with her silk-smooth vocals over sun-kissed production, the track is a gorgeous preview of what to expect from the album – her first full-length project in five years.
We are loving, CYBAH (acronym for “Could You Break A Heart”) and it’s downtempo 80s-inspired vibe brought to life with sweet-sounding synths, bass and drums that complement the expressive lyrical content as Syd tries to assess if a potential lover is capable of hurting her. For example, she sings, “If I ever make you mine, need to know if you’re the type / Do me wrong or do me right”. “Guess you never really know / Gotta watch the other girls / Scared ’bout it down the road.” Lucky Daye further reiterates this, pleading for his girl’s assurance, “Promise me your everything, no matter what they say.”
Moreover, Broken Hearts Club appears to be motivated by the singer’s private life. We shouldn’t be so excited by this, but it feels like the recipe for some great music.
… like I joined a club because all of my friends went through similar experiences. It was like a rite of passage
Syd has shared, “It almost felt like I joined a club because all of my friends went through similar experiences. It was like a rite of passage. I started writing the album on the relationship when I was in love. You’re really getting the whole journey from the beginning to the end. I want people to find it beautiful. It’s super vulnerable, sentimental, and it’s soft. There’s touching moments and a couple of dark moments.”
Furthermore, Syd has co-written and co-produced this follow-up to Fin, her 2017 solo debut. Alongside Lucky Daye, Broken Hearts Club will include contributions from Smino, Kehlani, Troy Taylor, G Koop and Darkchild.
Broken Hearts Club is expected to arrive on April 8th. Check out the video for CYBAH above, along with some other releases we’re digging this week.
