Jazmine Sullivan ft. H.E.R – A Girl Like Me
As far as R&B / Soul duets go in the modern era, this one is right up there! Taken from Jazmine Sullivan’s brilliant comeback, Heaux Tales that dropped at the top of the year. Jasmine and H.E.R take this one musically and vocally to the dizziest of heights.
Wizkid ft. Tems – Essence
Easily one of the biggest tracks worldwide, Essence, finally got visuals to match. As a track it simply cannot be denied and is the epitome of a timeless smash hit. Off the back of its success, Tems’ musical career has also hugely and well-deservedly flourished, as well as truly putting African music right on the map.
Children of Zeus – I Need You
The Manchester duo made more waves this year with the release of their brilliantly soulful album, Balance. I Need You encapsulates the groups Neo-Soul roots furthering their cause as one of the best Hip Hop Soul acts and definitely one of the UK’s finest.
Little Simz – Woman
2021 was kinda the year of Little Simz. She won Best International Flow at the BET awards, Best Female Act at the MOBOs, sold out an international tour and gave a stellar Tiny Desk Concert. The album Sometimes I Might Be Introvert has been widely received and applauded, with the single, Woman playing a huge role in this. The self-directed visual showcased another creative aspect of this musical genius. The track and visual were vividly perfect. From its all female cast, to poetic lyricism and infectiously catchy hook by Cleo Sol, the package here well and truly was complete.
Summer Walker ft. Ari Lennox – Unloyal
November saw the release of the highly anticipated sophomore album from Summer Walker. Simply put, Still Over It, delivered and then some. Never one to shy away from baring all on a track, Summer was at her unapologetic best. One of the true highlights was the duet with Ari Lennox on the track, Unloyal giving the Neo-Soul essence. The pair put on yet another dynamic duet showing the elite levels of R&B talent on display in 2021!
