Get to know…
Bursting into the scene, ever so shy, yet bold in her own status, let the world stand up for Amia Brave (pronounced A-MIA). Born and raised in the South-east of London with Nigerian heritage, her unique tone and soothing sound is what makes this 26- year-old so memorable. Her music is decorated with the artists that soundtracked her childhood and welcomed her love for the r&b genre.Loaded with heartfelt lyrics and catchy melodies, Amia first wrote her debut single Young & Misguided, which was released in 2020, in her university dorm. While Amia admits that since she was young she always knew she had a unique voice for music, her confidence was not always her strongest point. The singer takes the art of storytelling and real life experiences of herself and those around her to shape her own musical artistry. When asked what her ultimate artist goals are, in her own words, Amia said: “I was the most insecure and unconfident person in the world. I couldn’t put a video of myself singing out there. For me (forget all the signing) it’s about ticking off boxes for myself and particular smaller goals ticked – again for myself. Of course, ultimate accolades are the Grammys but small goals first- those tiny wins.”
2020 needed a happy ending, and it found one in Amia. The softly toned singer is simply at the cusp of her r&b liftoff moment. With influences from Lucky daye/ usher/ Jazmin Sullivan / keyisha cole/ Jay z/ and solange, her flavour multiplies and divides, the result is a matured songbird.
Sounds like…
Very much a matured voice, that has definitely grown from young to what it is today. Amia amalgamates the most classic of r&b riffs in her vocals, something of 90’s nostalgia combined with a neo-take on the genre.
In their lyrics…
A powerhouse of love ballads for love current, lost and future. Amia sings coming of age songs and fights the corner for Black faces worldwide.
Listen if you’re feeling…
Lovely when lighting candles and taking deep reflection. Equally, when one has an urge to find authentic British r&b, the conversation should always include Amia.
