Pip Millett is unquestionably one of the brightest breakthrough names in UK R&B right now. Her journey from quiet musical phenom to outspoken social commentator speaks volumes on the growth of her own character over the past year, as well as the effects of the post BLM landscape in the UK. As such, the transition has been seamless, as she continues to grow into an artist that truly reflects on the times through their art.
Ascending from strength to strength, the singer/songwriter is back with a new single, Hard Life. The track is taken from Pip’s forthcoming EP Motion Sick. Hard Life continues to showcase Pip’s storytelling strength over a gospel-inspired instrumental. Layered with Hip-Hop and Jazz aesthetics, the beat provides the perfect backdrop for Pip’s soulful vocals to pierce through.
Moreover, Pip’s emotive lyricism is striking throughout as she touches on the experience of her own grandparents’ struggles. Equally vivid is the visual of the track, which brings the essence of community roots and life to light.
When speaking on the track, Pip adds: “Hard Life is about exactly that. It’s about moving through unresolved trauma and understanding that ignoring those things doesn’t mean they go away. It takes learning and listening to yourself and lots of patience.”
Hard Life runs across a similar theme of her previous single Running, in regards to speaking on the struggles of real-life experiences. This suggests this could potentially be a running concept on her next EP. Furthermore, Pip’s natural ability to provide a personal snapshot through each track makes her a true musical standout.
Either way, we are feeling this tune loads! Pip Millett’s confessional lyricism-based soul is endearing and is only getting better. We are fully here for it and enjoying the development of one of UK-Soul’s rising stars.
