Off the back of her summer party-ready collaboration with Rico Love, Jealous, earlier this year, Mahalia is back in full effect with her new single Whenever You’re Ready.
The single is rich with ’90s nostalgia, using the infamous sample of Montell Jordan’s ‘Get It On Tonight’ and is a groove from the jump. Produced by Two Inch Punch and co-written with MNEK, Mahalia showcases her soulful versatility on this summer anthem.
When speaking on the track Mahalia adds: “I’m so gassed to be releasing this song. I remember the first time hearing Montell Jordan’s ‘Get It On Tonight’ in ‘Save The Last Dance’ when I was a kid. It’s been a song that has made me wanna dance ever since and sampling it in ‘Whenever you’re ready’ is really special to me. I had so much fun writing it with MNEK and Two Inch Punch. I was going through a breakup at the time and really wanted to capture this part of that process. It’s my new summer jam. I hope everyone loves it as much as I do!”
Whenever You’re Ready, is a self empowering track fitting for a sizzling summer, so the timing of the release couldn’t have been better. The premise of the track is about being confident in yourself even if or when a relationship ends and simply owning it.
Morevoer, despite the 90’s led aesthetic, sonically, the track merges modern R&B with the timeless feels of the past. Vocally, Mahalia is outstanding as expected with her soulful tones setting the scene of the track throughout. Additionally striking is the track’s visual. Striking themes of early 2000’s aesthetics are on show, homing in on the overarching theme of the single whilst adding another layer to the single.
Fans will be hoping this new single is the first of many more to come before the year is out. With 2019 being her last album release, we hope a full length project is also in the works.
