Her Songs - Halfway to the Moon, Toronto Vol. 2

EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE: Her Songs, the female collective making music to inspire, debut’s ‘Halfway to the Moon’ & talks new EP, ‘Toronto Vol. 2’

For the most part, the days of music groups seem to have passed (and every 90s kid weeps still). But there’s a new powerhouse collective of women singers uniquely going against the grain.

Her Songs is a global female collective of producers, musicians, songwriters and artists. United by a mutual mission to spotlight the talent of female producers and artists, as well as to celebrate female collaboration.

We caught up with this compelling collective to chat about their mission, their very much-anticipated EP Toronto Vol. 2, and an exclusive TBP release of a single from the upcoming project, Halfway To The Moon

Who are Her Songs?

The global female collective organically merge Neo-Soul, R&B & Pop. Their latest EP, Toronto Vol. 2  was created over the course of a week in an open-plan Airbnb in Toronto. The project originally came to be through a conversation between London-based Dane, Marie Dahlstrom and Brooklyn based Colombian, Dani Murcia. They then invited Christchurch, New Zealand-based Emily C Browning, French Londoner, The Naked Eye and elite-producer and Londoner, Emmavie to the group. A truly global collective, their collaboration is a pioneering testament to girls uniting.

An incredible female force

Our sneak-peek listen of Toronto Vol. 2 proves it takes listeners on a journey both lyrically and sonically. Taking song names from R&B luminary, Musiq Soulchild’s back catalogue and turning them into song lyrics. For example, the first single, Just My Luck is a cool 90s-inspired groove that does just this. Topics from self-discovery, love and everything in between also feature.

Latest single and TBP Exclusive, Halfway To The Moon, is a soothing heartfelt ballad draped in lush, vocal harmonies. It takes the group’s penchant for harmonising, putting it front and centre to stunning effect. The harmonies make the song. On a backdrop of soulfully slick production, Halfway To The Moon gives nods to the heritage of Soul / R&B whilst leaning into a modern, futuristic sound.

On how the Her Songs movement started…

Dani (NYC) and Marie (UK) found each other’s music online and wanted to meet up somewhere to write together. Each invited a few artists from around the world to join them to make it a proper retreat, with the addition of a videographer to document everything and from there it just snowballed into what it is now!

On the Her Songs mission…

I think we’re trying to break a few unspoken rules in the music industry. Making commercial music can often be a very exclusive and male-dominated industry under the watchful eye of major labels. It can sometimes feel very calculated and ego driven. With Her Songs, we want to make the process more open, collaborative and inclusive. Our viewers get to see how a song is made in real time as we write, with the added bonus of normalising the image of a female in the producer chair.

…we’re trying to break a few unspoken rules in the music industry.

On collaborating on projects across the globe…

It’s so refreshing! We are all artists individually and understand how much hard work goes into writing and producing a 3.30 song. Having a team of 5 experienced women makes it possible to have a fully recorded track at the end of the day that didn’t exist at breakfast.

Describe the EP in three words?

R&B Soul bangers!

On the Story the EP is trying to tell…

…about inspiring the next generation of femme artists, producers & musicians… want them to see more examples of women operating with confidence in a commercial industry… (We) never really saw that growing up as a guitar player and it really affected (us)… Representation is so important!
