Swedish up and coming favourite, Seinabo Sey, returned this past week with her first release since 2015 debut album, Pretend. The singer returned with her unique Swedish Afro-pop inspired brand of R&B, releasing 2 singles. Lead single, I Owe You Nothing is a defiant anthem for self-confidence and living fearlessly. With a thumping beat and a striking melody, I Owe You Nothing is the kind of track you turn on when it’s time to o hard in the gym (yeah, that kinda vibe).
Accompanied by a powerful, visually striking video filmed in her father’s home country, Gambia, Sey shows off the heritage she often pays homage to in her music. “I figured it’s time I stand up for myself and this is my best way of doing that”, Sey says of the song in a press release. Her decision, for the first time ever, to take over creative direction for the accompanying visuals, a marker for how important that message is to her.
The B side track, Remember, is a more reflective, offering with a feature from British Soul powerhouse, Jacob Banks. The double single release is apparently, a preview for more music to come in 2018. There’s always a seat at our table for music from Seinabo Sey, so we can’t wait for the new tunes to hit.
In the meantime, watch the I Owe You Nothing video below and be sure to give Remember a listen on your streaming platform too.
