Funk has seen a real resurgence in contemporary music over the past few years. Notably, the mysterious Sault collective, have leaned heavily into the genre across their albums but particularly on their 5 project. While Silk Sonic, the collaborative duo formed by Anderson. Paak and Bruno Mars, entire album is a tribute to Funk. But across the musical landscape and even genres, using funk as the foundation for the instrumentation and arrangement of songs.
On A Seat At The Table, Solange pays homage to a range of old Soul music sub-genres, one of which are the rhythmic, psychedelic groovy sounds of Funk. British R&B singer, Nao, released her debut album, For All We Know, a collection of electronic funky tunes she refers to as ‘Wonky funk’. Similarly, Dam-Funk and Nite Jewel’s July collab E.P. Nite Funk brought back funk vibes like we haven’t seen in a while and several others have followed suit in their music, from Anderson .Paak, Little Simz, Gold Link, Lucky Daye, Thundercat and even Chance The Rapper.
