Trap x Soul x R&B playlist. The best Trap Soul songs and artists in 2023. Featuring Brent Faiyaz, Bryson Tiller, 6LACK, Ebz the Artist, Ty Dolla $ign
When Bryson Tiller released his debut album in October 2015 titled ‘Trap Soul’, he popularised the name. ‘Trap Soul’ was a music genre steadily bubbling along semi-underground and, in some cases, even on the charts. ‘Trap’ was a relatively new strand of hip hop at the time. Featuring an intentionally virtually-unrefined blend of singing and rapping on Southern-US inspired, often low-fi Hip Hop beats. Artists like Fetty Wap, Dej Loaf and Post Malone, for instance, had recently blown up for making this kind of music. Trap Soul brings these elements of Trap Hip-Hop together with the melodies of contemporary R&B and Soul Music.
Tiller helped bring recognition to the influence Trap and Hip Hop was beginning to have on singers in the R&B / Soul genre with his 2015 album name. The genre of music already hugely popular in urban communities, amongst 15 – 25 year olds in cities across the world and being played in heavy rotation in clubs suddenly had a name. Succinct and aptly describing the genre, the crystallisation of a name seems to have inspired several other singers to categorise themselves under the banner. Therefore, Trap R&B today sometimes manifests as R&B club bangers and other times as more reflective, soulful songs. So today, the genre continues to wax strong. From Ty Dolla $ign, Brent Faiyaz, BLACK, Ebz the Artist and more.
