Mahalia, the Darling of the UK R&B scene, is set to release her sophomore album, IRL, this Friday 14 July. And she just released the dreamiest track, Ready, to promote it. Ready is a deeply introspective review of Mahalia’s journey and career. It marks her owning the moment she’s in, recognising she’s been prepared for it.
It is a song that perfectly describes where I was at when I started writing this record. I was partially scared – mostly excited.
Reflecting on the track, Mahalia shared, “Ready is the intro on my album. It is a song that perfectly describes where I was at when I started writing this record. I was partially scared – mostly excited. It’s been a long journey to get here but ultimately, I’m proud that I did. I loved this one as soon as I wrote it and I’m genuinely so excited for people to hear it. I’m finally ready for this album to come out and I hope everyone’s ready to hear it!”
The black and white visuals and candid nature of the Ready video, speak to the songs essence. The video was shot and directed by Mahalia’s longtime collaborator, Oli Kane.
Emboldened by the maturing of age and insights on life (she’s recently turned 24), Mahalia is not only breaking the mould on her second album, but determined to live life cognizantly. “This is a real reflection of the journeys I’ve had, what actually happened and a celebration of everyone who got me there. There are names and family members I mention because it all helped in shaping who I am,” Mahalia rationalises. With an innocent, yet assured gleam appearing on her face, “I’m so proud of this album, and so proud of how much I challenged myself to just let those stories out.”
We’re excited for the album release and for more from Mahalia. Catch her on tour later this year.
