After her immaculate debut album in 2021, Seattle-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Malia returns with an equally exquisite new EP titled What’s After “I Love You”. In what is her most vulnerable project to date, Malia documents the chronicles of a breakup, from its inception to the beginning of healing.
We are loving the hopeful yet bittersweet opening track, More Than Love, where Malia asks “what’s after ‘I love you?’” and wonders if her relationship has what it takes to last forever. She explores how it takes more than love and how honesty plays a big part. Malia’s velvety vocals fit perfectly over the bluesy melody and they have the power to take the listener back to the first love they thought would stand the test of time, but didn’t. Reminiscent of a vintage film, the visuals for “More Than Love” fittingly fill you with nostalgia, and feel like opening a shoebox full of beautiful memories from a past love.
We got to know Malia through Dirty Laundry, her 2017 collaboration with Syd, and she has been on a steady rise ever since, with her 2019 EP “Rise” and her debut album “Unpolished”. In fact, Alicia Keys took notice and asked her to cover How Come You Don’t Call Me in celebration of the 20th anniversary of her album Songs In A Minor.
You can check out Malia’s wistful More than Love above. We encourage you to check out the full EP What’s After ‘I Love You’, but be cautious, as it may get you all in your feelings (we take no responsibility for texts sent to your ex!).
