The infamous Jazz label, Blue Note Records recently announced a new posthumous album from late Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen, There Is No End. The album will be released on April 30th, marking the 1 year anniversary of Allen’s passing.
Cosmosis is the first single and features Nigerian poet Ben Okri and rapper Skepta. A track that despite fusing generations of talent together, works very well throughout. Ben Okri leads proceedings with a very thought-provoking poetry piece over a punchy atmospheric beat which perfectly fits. As expected, it delivers Jazz at its finest.
Okri’s verse was a specific tribute to Tony, explaining: “How do you absorb a cosmos or integrate a cosmos, enrich a world, infiltrate in the highest possible way and change the mentalverse, the spiritverse; it’s by cosmosis.” In addition, Skepta also goes in as expected. Once again, showcasing his versatility to spit over any beat or tempo with a dazzling story-telling 16 bar verse.
We are definitely looking forward to hearing what the full album has to offer. With features from the likes of Sampa The Great and Lava La Rue also on the album. This will definitely be an excitingly eclectic album to listen to.
