Alternative R&B singer Layla Kardan is back with a new single ‘Loyalty’. The single is taken from her forthcoming EP ‘Abscission’, set for release 26th February 2021.
The track is produced and co-written by Juan Ariza, whose production credits include Dua Lipa’s ‘Pretty Please’. Sonically, Layla Kardan cultivates a dark musical mood throughout, over which she lays vulnerable vocals and emotionally gutting lyrics. Overall, Layla sets the scene effortlessly well, offering vivid snapshots and dissections of a complex love romance.
Speaking on the theme behind the track, Layla explains; “Taking a stance before entering a new relationship by laying your cards out instead of re-enacting the same toxic patterns, because Loyalty doesn’t come easy”. This sense of deep self-reflection and personal growth cuts through very well. On the whole, ‘Loyalty’ is a thematic bop that captures the listener and takes you on a ride from jump.
The visual is equally impressive with its thought-provoking concepts. Layla explains “We shot the video before the BLM protests in the USA started. While editing the footage with the director, we felt it was important to leave the scene between the Sudanese and the white actors. Anti-blackness has long been a problem in our region but it is rarely discussed”.
