An artist that to many may have been quietly but surely bubbling is Joel Culpepper. With one of the most distinctive sounds on the scene, the soulful South-East Londoner and singer / songwriter has been busy working on his upcoming album, Sgt Culpepper set for release later this year.
This week he gave an inkling on what to expect from the new music with his latest single, Poetic Justice. The single arrives on the back of 2 previous singles released last year ‘Return’ & ‘W.A.R’.
Produced by UK Jazz scene juggernauts, Tom Misch and Swindle, Poetic Justice showcases everything to love about progressive Soul music. From its smooth guitar riffs to jazzy tones, the production is rich throughout the instrumental.
Speaking on the track, Joel Culpepper, said: “I got to write this one with Tom Misch after a session for his album project with Yussef Dayes. Tom reached out after hearing ‘Afraid To Be King’ produced by Roy Davis Jr. Pleased he did cause I’ve been a fan of his work for a while. I feel like justice is poetry, but it’s also complex. Part of justice is forgiveness; no longer enslaved by the pain of what someone’s done to you, but the ability to move on from it.”
The visual for the track is even more impressive and truly brings the track to life. Based on an enriched 70s aesthetic, the video showcases themes of musical nostalgia and black love. One for the lovers of where Neo-Soul comes together with Jazz for the perfect groove.
