Yazmine MB is a new UK soul singer on the rise. The 19 year old BRIT School graduate takes inspiration from greats such as Amy Winehouse, Lauryn Hill whilst blending her sound with the more contemporary R&B. Something certainly on show on her new single ‘Stuck In These Walls’ released this week. From South East London, she showcases a strong sense of identity and love for the arts based on her BRIT School background. Yazmine genuinely channels true emotions on the track, with her warm and honest tone vocally.
Art truly imitates life, and the inspiration of the track was the current pandemic. She explains: “I like to be busy and active so being stuck indoors was really frustrating. Everyone was just working out how to connect online as well, via zoom, FaceTime etc and with that being the only way to connect, it felt disappointing when I couldn’t get through to the people I wanted to speak to! There were obviously a lot of questions about how leaders were dealing with people as well, someone’s life is no mean feat! This track really is me getting out my early quarantine frustration.”
Production wise, the beat is rather stripped back, allowing space for Yazmine’s vocals to remain at the forefront which truly captivates throughout. In addition, lyrically, Yazmine comes through clutch with substance adding to the all round feel of the single. She adds “I think the thing I’d like people to take from it is to look after each other. I know that sounds cliché but lots of people have been struggling during this period and could do with a friend. I’d like to think of the track not only as a message of solidarity, that we’re all in the same boat but also as a reminder to look out for those you care about, and even strangers because you never know what someones going through, and we all know the effect isolation and pandemic-related stress can have on someone’s mental health.
It’s fair to say, that whilst Yazmine MB may be at the early stages of her musical journey, she is very much wanting to provide a message through her art and we are fully here for it!
