Been a while since we’ve been this HYPED to announce a new playlist!!
10 – 14 July, UMUADA will headline the 2018 Play Mill Festival, at the King’s Head Theatre, Islington. Based on the short play by Justina Kehinde and Yosola Olorunshola, UMUADA premiered at the Bunker Theatre in November 2017. In an extended 60 minute feature, UMUADA returns for a five night headline run. And now we are proud to bring you the official soundtrack to what promises to be a standout in the London theatre scene this summer.
Anwu is turning 60. Against her wishes, her daughters, Nike and Tolu are planning a party at their home in North London. Their older brother, Chi, is nowhere to be seen and their dad is in Nigeria “building the family home” that never seems to finish. In the midst of the chaos, Anwu struggles to hold her family together, and hold onto herself in the process.

Meaning ‘first-born daughters’ in Igbo, one of Nigeria’s major languages, UMUADA is a witty yet poignant family drama exploring the silence, struggles and nuances of mental health, immigration and motherhood in the urban African diaspora. A play like no other, UMUADA’s been described as “a refreshingly funny, sharp and breathtakingly moving perspective the London theatre scene has needed for a long time. All the little nuances carefully and cleverly pieced together to create this stark reflection of relatable experiences glaring right at you way before you know it. Honestly, everyone should watch this”
