Since Ray BLK’s announcement as the BBC Sound of 2017 poll winner, she’s been added to a festival line-up damn near every week. Paired with news of a European tour supporting Emeli Sande, it’s great news not just for BLK but for music fans everywhere.
Ray BLK has been praised for her songwriting and the powerful grit with which she delivers her records. But her incredible live performance finesse is less talked about. We had the chance to catch her performance at Radio 1’s Annie Mac Presents: AMP Collected and it was electrifying. Ray BLK owns the stage like no other. Her presence commands the attention of all in the room and she sings like it comes from the very depths of her being. Yet her performance is raw and effortless, like she’s singing to her closest group of friends. The kid’s got great vocals, incredible energy and connects with her audience via unmatched passion. For someone still on their way up, she performed with a confidence and mastery of a seasoned performer.
She performed her hit, My Hood, as well as several other singles from her 2016 mini-album Durt. She also sprinkled in Destiny’s Child and Alicia Keys covers. A Ray BLK show is a great night out where the audience comes for good work out and to sing along.
