We’re super-excited about Oyinda, a Nigerian-British up-and-comer, lighting up the R&B / Soul scene. This week, we give our thoughts on her latest EP Restless Minds, introduce Mabel, another rising star and a mini-review of Chrisette Michelle’s album. Let’s get to it, shall we?
1. Oyinda’s Restless Mind
Oyinda is only 2 EPs in and has already earned some pretty impressive accolades. Rolling Stone dubbed her “R&B’s best kept secret”, while Noisey have termed her “R&B’s most exciting new act”. If you’re wondering what all the hype is about, Oyinda’s latest release, a 5-track E.P. ominously called Restless Minds is the answer to your questions.
Wondrously dark, smooth and rich, Restless Minds, is a dream for lovers of alternative R&B or those with more experimental music tastes, that like artists that look take sound to new places, unrestricted by genre-labelling. The beats on Restless Minds are reverberating, synthy and electronic, but somber, soulful and emotional at the same time. Sonically powerful from start to finish, the record chronicles the variance and rockiness of love and relationships, with Oyinda’s vocals drawing you into the music in careful balance with the beats. She represents R&B the millennial way – strongly vibesy and mellowly cool.
Oyinda is a true creative that is impressively in firm control of her career. Her E.P. is independently released off her own label, she co-writes and co-produces all her music and her newest video for Never Enough (above) is self-directed and choreographed. This is the future of the music business and we’re excited for it!
