Newcomer Alert! Meet Jamila Woods
Jamila Woods is a Chicago born, bred and based Soul singer and poet. Some of her biggest creds are collaborations with Chance The Rapper, another Chitown native generating incredible amounts of hype, even in mainstream circles, including endorsements from Kanye West and Complex magazine. She was also featured on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ White Privilege, a record in which the rapper takes on the controversial topic of the relationship between his whiteness and his mainstream acceptance and consequent success.
But Jamila is an artist with far greater depths than popular collabs – she’s a burgeoning poet, receiving much critical acclaim for her work. She specifically seeks to encourage black girls and women with her poetry and music, by speaking to their experiences and reminding girls of their magical qualities. Read this interesting feature article / interview by The Fader, in which Jamila talks about her poetry, her personal reservations on doing the Macklemore collaboration and more.
