James Blake’s ‘The Colour In Anything’
Following our predictions that a new album was soon to hit the stores last week, James Blake did indeed release his third L.P. ‘The Colour In Anything’ on Friday May 6. For those familiar with Blake’s previous work, the 17-song L.P. is a walk down familiar territory – his signature baritone voice laid onto dark electronic beats singing of isolation. He’s stuck to what he does well and given us what we’ve come to expect from him – minimalist great music. It’s a lengthy, fairly heavy listen, requiring some level of investment to stay with Blake, as he seems to sometimes get self-indulgent, falling deeper and deeper into the sound of isolation, almost leaving the listener behind. But he always brings it back before it’s too late. The album features a Frank Ocean co-write and collaborations from Rick Rubin.
Our current favourites are Modern Soul, Waves Know Shores, F.O.R.E.V.E.R, Love Me In Whatever Way and Choose Me. Also check out our favourite review of the album so far, this piece by The Verge and this tres helpful song-by-song breakdown by NME for more info. Listen to the album below:
